what’s the worst that could happen?
This project came out of a very simple idea, playing on the received notion that water and electricity don't mix.
The first instance of this installation appeared at a concert at the University of East Anglia in 2005 called 'Circuits of Malpractice', and consisted of a Yamaha keyboard in the kitchen sink next to the concert hall. A portion of the circuit-board was removed from the case and placed under the taps, which slowly dripped water onto the components. As the water falls onto the board it follows its own patch along the circuit making random connections and eliciting odd sounds from the keyboard before dripping down into the sink.
A second, more self-contained, version was installed at the 2006 'Unsafe' festival at the Safehouse in Poole. This time the source of the water was an attractive water-feature which spewed a continuous stream onto the board. It was very popular with the children.
This version was installed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich as part of their 2007 'Garden Greats' exhibition.
The mp3 clip is an extract from a recording made at 'Unsafe' by Adam Asnan, who also took the photo.
